Rns 315 Guide

The RNS-315 doesn't need an update to support A2DP because it has that out the box from day one. The RNS-510 needed an hardware upgrade to a separate Bluetooth module for A2DP. You seem to be confused.
Like most of us, I decided to pick up the base model 2011 GTI after finding out you had to get a sunroof to get navigation and xenons. Sourcing the RNS 315 unit for a decent price was the hardest part. Needed for install: RNS 315 head unit with security code VW navigation antenna (blue connector) Torx bits and driver Interior trim removal tools Double sided tape Magnet Zip ties Needle nose pliers VCDS (VAGCOM) Shown below is the difference between the lower model RCD 310 and the RNS 315. Apart from the new unit being touch screen and equipped with navigation there isn't much to the physical characteristics besides the blue plug in the rear of the RNS 315. This is the port for the navigation antenna that you will need to install.
I ordered mine from amazon.com here: First I started by watching the great youtube video by Futrell on the RNS 510 install. Honestly, I cannot take much credit for this install as they pretty much showed me everything. Starting with some interior trim removal wedges that I picked up from Sears, start at the bottom of the trim around the radio cage and gently pry it away. Some force is needed but be gentle as it is VW plastic.
You will only need to remove the trim around the the radio. Here is an image of the backside of the trim to give you and idea of what you are working with: Next you will remove the 4 torx screws holding the head unit in place. After removing them, the head unit can be pulled out of place, and the connectors removed from the rear of the unit. I did not take any pictures of these as they are pretty simple to understand. After, unscrew the two screws circled in red to remove the vents. Once removed pry the vents out by pushing up and pulling out in the area shown below by green arrows.
Once the vents are removed, you will need to sourc a position for the navigation antenna. I placed it on top of the a/c vent show below with double sided tape. Before applying tape, make sure the antenna has a straight line of sight to the sky. I placed my antenna on the right side, but I would put yours on the left to make it easier to hide the excess wire.
I then coiled up the extra wire, tied it off with a couple zip ties and tucked it away in the back. I also then tucked the female connector down through the dash to where it will be needed to be plugged in. I also installed another zip tie to make sure it was going to be out of the way. Now that you have the antenna installed it is now time to plug everything back into the rear of the new RNS 315. Installation is the complete reverse of removal.
After it is all installed, start the car up and plug in the new head units security code and you are ready to roll! Before you power up the car, you will also need to disconnect your factory compass as the new hadunit is equipped with one. You also need to do a little VCDS coding on the 19-CAN Gateway: Start off by selecting 'Select Control Module' Next you need to click on '19-CAN Gateway' Make sure it loads your car's info. Then go to 'Coding-07 Next, got to Byte 4, Bit 6 (37-Navigation) and check the box Click Esc and then a box will pop up. Select 'Do It'.
After that a box will say whether or not it accepted. After that you will be done.
Note: After my installtion I had some issues with the head unit shutting off after about 15-20 minutes of driving. After months of research I finally brought it into the dealership today to let them have a crack at it. After about an hour of troubleshooting and a firmware/map update it is working perfectly fine, free of charge. Hope this helps anyone having issues.
Goodluck with the install! I have a few questions. Where did you buy the RNS315, and how much did it cost?
You didn't remove the vehicle's built-in compass (above the headliner near the rear of the vehicle). Have you noticed any issues because of this? Does the direction reported on the MFD seem accurate? Are directions displayed on the MFD? Does the auxiliary input in the center armrest work, or do you need to use the AUX input on the face of the actual RNS315 now? Most of the how-to's that I've found for this upgrade involve some VAGCOM work.
You didn't do any - have you noticed anything not working 100% because of this? I have a 2011 GTI with the RCD510 - I would love to upgrade to an RNS315 if I could find one for a good price and could install as simply as you have.

I did not remove the compass. The direction display on the MFD.
My iPod was working today so I would think the armrest is good. As for upgrading from the RCD510, I would imagine it being the same thing. Some people told me that I needed o reomve the antenna connection in the headliner but my car is living proof that you do not need to do that.
Did go into VCDS aftwards and clear the codes from me running without the navigation antenna while I waited for it to get delivered. When you go into VCDS, you cannot even select radio anymore, only navigation.
I think the answer is no - the head unit firmware isn't updateable. If you want newer firmware for newer features like a2dp and avrcp then you have to pull and replace the unit. Sucks that VW/Audi doesn't seem to contract the manufacturer of the head units to provide updates for a few years. The firmware is upgradeable on the RNS-315 just as it is on many lesser electronics modules on the rest of the vehicle.
The real question is are these updates available to the public. The newer firmwares may or may not be compatible with your older hardware version. Thus, flashing a new firmware on your older hardware version may cause more harm than good. VW (or any automaker ) just doesn't offer firmware upgrades to cars just to make sure you have the newest version. They are targeted to fix specific issues or match newer hardware. It's not like the Ford Sync or Chevy My Link where they dynamically update the software to add new features or address problems.
VW pretty much views their systems as fixed unless a serious problem exists. Interesting take. If that were really the case VW/Audi would update the firmware on both the radio and the module to add new features like a2dp and fix issues related to track info with an iPod connected to the head unit via MFD. There's exactly ONE update that I'm aware of for the RNS 315 A unit that is installed in my '11 Tiguan. It did fix a problem with my iPod but it wasn't easy to find or apply. If there's more updates my dealership isn't aware of them.
Thus because I want Bluetooth 2.0 functionality I've purchased a D unit and a 9w7 K unit. Both have the required firmware for better Bluetooth functionality. This.should. be provided via updates rather than requiring I replace hardware on my own nickel I'm my opinion. Updating head unit firmware is fairly straightforward, but there are caveats. With our RNS 510, there were firm warnings to match specific versions of the firmware up with specific hardware only. If you forced an upgrade on in incompatible hardware unit, you could/would brick it.
Rns 315 Software Update
My guess is that liability is part of what keeps the dealers from wanting to mess with it. You might want to check with the manufacturer of the head unit.
Sometimes they can be very helpful and you might be surprised at what they'll provide. Then again, they maybe contractually bound to not provide anything. Either way, you don't have much to loose with an internet search and an e-mail or two. For example, I have in-wall touch screens as a part of my home automation system. The screens are Android based and the file system on one of mine got corrupted somehow.
The US supplier did not have the software to reflash the unit, nor did they seem inclined to even go look for it. They preferred to sell you a new touch screen instead. I did a bit of digging on the internet and with 10-15 minutes had a contact for the manufacturer in China, so I contacted them via e-mail not knowing what to expect. Their English speaking agent responded within hours and I had the reflash program sent to me via e-mail within a day.
The reflash also contained some minor updates so I was happy x2! Eventually the US supplier took my lead and began offering the reflash software. Your mileage my vary with the RNS315, but you have nothing to loose by trying. Interesting take. Just as the ABS, Climate Control, & ECU can be updated, so can the radio. The RNS-315 doesn't need an update to support A2DP because it has that out the box from day one. The RNS-510 needed an hardware upgrade to a separate Bluetooth module for A2DP.
You seem to be confused. The original version of the RNS-315 was BT 2.0 and A2DP.
