Tin, you should have some scans. Let me know if they don't come through. I have nothing on lifting, just blocking the counterweight. I have never found any written documentation on operating a DeVlieg. I have to assume the instruction was provided by a factory salesman. One difference between a DeVlieg and other boring mills is use of the spindle axis. On a DeVlieg, the table (platen) in and out is used for positioning.
This in and out is rapid only, no feedrates. All boring and other Z axis work is done with the spindle. Do you know yet if the Spiramatic positioning still works on your machine? On edit: tried to correct poor writing about z axis Last edited by gbent; at 03:52 PM. The box under the table controls table movement left to right, and raises and lowers the entire spindle housing. This IS the feed box which allows the machine to mill in two directions.
The THIRD dimension is simply the quill moving in or out, for boring or drilling. I have around twelve Devlieg manuals, for all sorts of machines.
Devlieg Machine
They're really pretty useless, for running the machine or for that matter NOT that good at even describing lubricating the machine. I have at least FIVE B series manuals, of different vintages, but NONE of them covers my 3B-96 exactly. The best manual I have was written by HERBERT for their Herbert-Devliegs, which were English made Devlieg jigmils. I'd offer it, but currently it's already loaned out to another devleig owner in Utah. But don't hesitate to buy a Herbert Devlieg manual. WAY more information on troubleshooting!
Devlieg appears to have provided set up and training to the original purchaser of the machine. Three years ago I purchased TWO BOXES of salesmans information on these machines.
So I have a little bit of insite on their machines. But despite a wealth of information, I still struggle to figure out my machines. After the inital sale, I don't think devlieg gave a thought to guys like us buying their machines for almost nothing forty years later.
When they were new, I'd bet a million dollars, you got GREAT support! By the way you can get the EXACT manual for your machine from Bourn and Koch in Rockford Illinois. They have all the prints and documentation on these machines. Be prepared however to spend around $250.00 for the manual. Might seem steep, but I can see where it takes a LOT of time to dig out your machine number from their archives and then pull and copy all of the relevant prints. These guys ARE very helpful. I bought a schematic for my 4h-96 and it was EXACTLY the right one.
Although expensive, you can't troubleshoot one of these machines without an accurate schematic!
